Do Popcorn & Stucco Ceilings Contain Asbestos? (Ontario Guide)

Some popcorn and stucco ceilings in older Ontario homes contain asbestos. A test is the way to find out, so it belongs before anyone scrapes, sands or drills the ceiling.

The short answer

Some textured ceilings contain asbestos, and many do not. A lab test is the reliable way to know which kind you have.

Testing before work starts means nobody disturbs the ceiling without knowing what is in it.

Why older homes need a closer look

Health Canada says that before 1990, asbestos was mainly used to insulate and fireproof buildings and homes. It also says asbestos may still be found in older building materials, including plaster and surface treatments.

Its advice is to hire a professional to test for asbestos before remodelling. Read Health Canada’s asbestos guide for homeowners for the full advice.

How testing works

A trained professional takes small samples of the ceiling texture, and an accredited lab examines them for asbestos.

Until you have the result, Health Canada’s advice is to avoid disturbing materials that may contain asbestos.

If the test is negative

The texture can come down as a normal removal job. Our popcorn and stucco ceiling removal page explains how the room is protected, scraped, repaired and smoothed.

If the test is positive

Health Canada says that if a professional finds asbestos, you should hire a qualified asbestos removal specialist to remove it safely.

That work follows its own safety rules, separate from ordinary ceiling removal. Your removal specialist can explain what applies to your home.

Covering instead of removing

Health Canada says asbestos materials that are undisturbed, sealed or in good condition pose no significant health risk.

Sometimes a ceiling can be covered rather than removed, for example with a new layer of drywall. A qualified asbestos specialist can tell you whether that suits a ceiling that tested positive.

Your questions, answered

Do all popcorn ceilings contain asbestos?

No. Many textured ceilings contain none, but some in older homes do. A lab test is the way to know for sure.

Is my home old enough to worry about?

Health Canada says asbestos was mainly used in buildings and homes before 1990. If your ceiling is older than that, or you are not sure, testing is the safe first step.

Can I test the ceiling myself?

Health Canada advises hiring a professional to test for asbestos before remodelling. It also advises against disturbing asbestos materials yourself.

What happens if the test finds asbestos?

Health Canada advises hiring a qualified asbestos removal specialist to remove it safely. Ordinary ceiling removal waits until that work is done.

Can a stucco ceiling be painted over instead?

Painting or covering a ceiling leaves the texture in place. If the ceiling tested positive, ask a qualified asbestos specialist which option suits it.
